Odyssey Nursery gains global recognition for sustainability case study with UCL in ‘Voices of Children’ Project

Odyssey Nursery’s case study, “Inspiring Young Voices for Sustainability,” has been selected for inclusion in the Voices of Children project by the Bright Start Foundation, in collaboration with University College London (UCL). Chosen from numerous submissions worldwide, Odyssey is the only organisation in Dubai contributing to this prestigious global research initiative.

The Voices of Children project aims to revolutionise early childhood education by placing young children’s voices, experiences, and cultural diversity at its core. The research includes case studies, virtual art galleries, and physical manifestos, highlighting how creative arts can empower children as agents of sustainable change. The project fosters innovation through comprehensive educator training, mentorship programs, and an intergenerational approach engaging both parents and older family members. The publication featuring Odyssey’s case study underscores the innovative practices, challenges, and successes of educators integrating this teaching approach into daily learning. It introduces the first chapter of the Voices of Children Pedagogy™ framework, a 17-stage guide designed to transform this vision into practice across diverse early childhood settings worldwide. Through inspiring narratives and actionable insights, this global movement is reshaping early childhood education.

This recognition highlights how young children, through creative expression and guided discussions, are actively contributing to the global conversation on sustainability—an effort closely aligned with Dubai’s commitment to environmental responsibility. As part of the UAE’s Dubai Clean Energy Strategy 2050, Odyssey’s sustainability initiative fits seamlessly into the city’s forward-thinking goals to create a more sustainable future. At the heart of Odyssey Nursery’s approach is the Reggio Emilia teaching philosophy, which places a strong emphasis on fostering a connection with nature and environmental awareness. This child-centered approach encourages children to explore the natural world, appreciate its beauty, and understand the importance of sustainability through hands-on learning experiences. Odyssey’s research for this case study began when children expressed curiosity about environmental responsibility. Through engaging discussions and creative activities, they explored key environmental issues, sharing their perspectives in a heartfelt art and letter project advocating for sustainability.

The children’s artwork reflects their deep concern for the planet and their creative vision for a sustainable future. Jahan painted a “happy Earth,” emphasizing collective care to keep the planet healthy. Filippo’s painting depicted a polluted Earth, expressing his worries about environmental degradation but also showing hope for change. Isabella’s drawing highlighted the importance of keeping the Earth clean by not littering, while Zian focused on proper waste disposal. Agatha’s artwork envisioned a clean Earth filled with vibrant nature, including grass, butterflies, and birds. Laura’s drawing advocated for reducing pollution by using bicycles, and Isabella emphasized how a clean Earth allows trees to grow, showing the interconnectedness of nature. Their collective masterpiece embodies a hopeful and responsible vision for the planet’s future. These reflections were transformed into action through a collaborative art and letter project advocating for sustainability. Additionally, as part of this project, artworks from Odyssey’s children were included in the Voices of Children Virtual Galleries amongst 1000 other children from 7 other countries and the physical exhibit was held at UCL East in London.

“Witnessing our children express their ideas and seeing their voices valued on such a global platform fills me with immense joy and pride,” commented Hoda El Naddaf, Reggio Director of six Odyssey Nursery branches and author of the case study. “There are so many layers to a child’s creation, which adults don’t always see or fully understand. Yet, children often communicate the most complex ideas in the simplest ways. It is our responsibility to provide them with a creative platform to express themselves from an early age, as this fosters a future generation that can think critically, solve problems creatively, and approach challenges with empathy and innovation—skills that are essential for the future of humanity,” she added.

Hoda holds a Master’s in Early Years Education and has been with Kids First Group, Dubai’s leading early education group that ideated and developed Odyssey Nursery, for 11 years. She is in charge of teacher training and ensuring that the Reggio Emilia approach is accurately implemented throughout the branches. By making meaningful contributions to the global conversation on sustainability, Odyssey Nursery not only reflects Dubai’s commitment to empowering future generations but also makes the city proud on the world stage, reinforcing its leadership in shaping the next generation of global citizens.
